(Probably common) Etch upgrade woes
Posted by summitwulf on Sat 12 May 2007 at 06:49
Upgraded to Etch (from Sarge) on firewall box with no X - all fine. Tried the same on a desktop machine, following all the advice here (http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html) and now have a system that won't start the X server and hence gdm anymore.

The Xorg.0.log file contains errors - it is below.

Not sure how to start fixing this...

Here is the xorg.conf:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)

# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated

# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Since you don't seem to have any special configurations in your xorg.conf, I'd just reconfigure from scratch, something like
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf{,.old} && dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg
should do. (can't remember if dpkg-reconfigure makes a backup of the file or not)

I tried this but it hasn't seemed to have made any difference. On reboot, I still get a plain text login; logging in as root I can actually issue 'startx' and it starts - at least to the extent that I get a mouse cursor on the plain 'herringbone' hatched background. The cursor moves, but I can't summon any menus or even quit out of it other than by pulling the plug on the machine.

When 'xstart' is issued there are some error messages that flash by before this background appears, but I don't know how to capture them.

Bizarrely, there's also some sort of error message (starting with the word 'Failed' in red) as the machine boots. Again, it's too quickly shown to read, and I couldn't find it in the output of dmesg once I had booted. I thought all boot messages ended up in there? Odd. I *think* it relates to a drive or something about the filesystem.

I wonder what to try next?

It seems to me that X itself runs pretty well (it you can launch it with startx). So maybe the problem is with the display manager: Are you sure GDM is installed and activated at boot? Try:
# /etc/init.d/gdm start
If it fails, at least you should see some error message.

Trying this as root results in the command returning without error, but absolutely nothing else happens...

Umm.. forgot to login (hence I was 'Anonymous'.

I used apt-get to install gdm again:

apt-get install gdm

and now on reboot I get the login screen... but then I just end up with a cursor on a nice blue empty background. Nothing else. What else do I need to install?

This definitely proves that X is actually working.

So now the question is: what else do you expect? If you want a GNOME desktop, make sure you have gnome-desktop-environment installed.

If you want an Xfce desktop, make sure you have xfce4 installed.

For KDE, install kde. And so on.

Otherwise, if you chose not to use any pre-made desktop enviroments, maybe you just need a window manager (fvwm, icewm, sawfish, metacity...) and a script in /etc/gdm/PostLogin that activates it and spawns a couple of xterms.

If you tell us in which condition you are, we can advice you on how to go on...

Thanks for this.

I actually followed this up with:

apt-get install gnome

and I got the 'normal' desktop environment back, that I had before. I haven't given a really good checkout yet, but as far as the graphical desktop, things seem to be pretty much recovered.

It does look like I got a lot of other stuff I don't use (Abiword, Evolution etc) installed as well, but I guess I can remove that.

OK, things do seem to be recovered! The only slightly odd thing is that for some reason the 'splash screen' that shows all the bits and pieces being loaded (Metacity and so on) doesn't actually go away until you click on it. If you don't it just persists in the middle of the desktop, even if you bring up screens on top of it. Weird, but not life-threatening.

Thank you to everyone who helped me with this problem!

Aha... maybe this is the issue - no space on the drive,

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 73G 70G 0 100% /
tmpfs 126M 0 126M 0% /lib/init/rw

I moved some stuff off the machine and now has 86% usage on /. I still have the same problems with X however, and the mysterious boot-time message about filesystems is still there (although I still don't know exactly what it says).

I found something else a bit curious here:

http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/i386/release-notes/ch-informa tion.en.html#s-xorg

under the section '5.3 XFree86 to X.Org transition': "The most important change is that /usr/X11R6/bin has been dropped and only remains as a symlink to /usr/bin. This means the directory has to be empty at the time the new packages are installed. The new packages conflict with most packages that used /usr/X11R6/bin, but in some cases manual intervention may be needed. Please remember to not run the distribution upgrade from within an X session.

In case the upgrade aborts during X.Org installation, you should check if any files are still left in /usr/X11R6/bin. You can then use dpkg -S to find out which Debian package installed that file (if any), and remove such packages with dpkg --remove. Please make a note which packages you remove, so that you can install substitute packages later on. Before continuing with the upgrade, all files in /usr/X11R6/bin need to be removed."

If I look in my /usr/X11R6/bin, there are many files in there still. What to do about that? Delete them? Re-run the upgrade? Uninstall X and reinstall?
