Upgraded to Etch (from Sarge) on firewall box with no X - all fine. Tried the same on a desktop machine, following all the advice here (http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html) and now have a system that won't start the X server and hence gdm anymore.

The Xorg.0.log file contains errors - it is below.

Not sure how to start fixing this...

Well, this is a bit of a sad post in many ways; a close family member has just had a slight stroke during the last two weeks and is currently in hospital, starting her recovery. She is in her seventies and has rheumatoid arthritis, so her mobility is also low.

Her house has a broadband network connection ('BT Option 2') and I have just sorted out the configuration of the Voyager 210 router to allow external connections to boxes behind this unit. (But don't get me started on BT's criminally bad 'support').

I'm thinking of adding various things around the house to both help and monitor, for example, a couple of strategically placed webcams, to allow me to keep a remote eye on things and be able to help quickly if something goes wrong. I don't want a Big Brother feel with cameras everywhere, but for peace of mind it would be nice to see if someone is still mobile, the house isn't on fire, and so on. I currently have one Axis 206M network camera which I am experimenting with.

Extending this a bit, I am wondering if a very, very simple-to-use video conferencing system, based on a Debian system, could be set up. To be honest the person was quite a technophobe even before the stroke, so I would need something which could be controlled entirely remotely - i.e. I could make a phone call to them to ask them to go and sit in their favourite chair near the system, and the link can then be established remotely without them needing to do anything. Is this possible? Are there any packages that could be used to build something like this?

Another thing I'd like to look at is the possibility of having some sort of 'alert' or 'contact me' system whereby the Debian box can send me an email if the person has a problem or would just like a chat (via phone or video, or just a visit). The goal would be absolute ease of use during the early stages of the recovery, so it has to be 'press this green button' simple, no logging on, no keyboards, no turning on monitors, etc. A single button is pushed, I get an email, I call the person back, that's it.

If anyone can offer me help or advice, I'd much appreciate it. Computing has long been touted as a help in these sort of situations, let's see what can be done?

This month - December - we will apparently be seeing Debian Etch become the new 'stable' release. What is the best way to upgrade a Sarge system? Is it just as simple as 'apt-get update' followed by 'apt-get dist-upgrade'?

I installed Totem and GnomeBaker on a Dell box with Debian Sarge. What's weird is that both these programs only see the CDROM drives if I am root. They run if I am a normal user, but I get errors (see below) if I try to play a CD.

The /etc/fstab file seems to be correctly set up for the CDROMs:

/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 auto ro,user,noauto,exec 0 0
/dev/hdd /media/cdrom1 auto ro,user,noauto,exec 0 0

and the permissions on the files in /media are:

For example, from Totem as a normal user I get:

and yet it works fine if I quit and restart it after an su. In GnomeBaker, if I try to say copy a CD, I repeatedly get 'Information - Please insert a disk into the SONY CD-RW CRX216E'. The disk is there already, and once again I don't get this error if I run GnomeBaker as root.

I'm sure this is simple. Can any kind soul enlighten me as to how to fix this? It looks to me like the group permissions on the CDROM drives should have another group added to them so they can be accessed by these programs, but what group should it be, and how do I find out?

dnsmasq seemed to be the solution to many of my home networking problems, but it is rapidly becoming a bit of a nightmare. Getting a fairly straightforward setup working reliably seems to be a bit of an issue - things seem to work, then break mysteriously the following day(???)...

Part of the problem (or maybe the entire problem) is that I haven't been able to really get a solid understanding of some of the configuration parameters in dnsmasq.conf. Although some things are well explained, others are a bit of a mystery and I think it is these that are causing me problems.

My firewall system is a low-power box with two ethernet adapters, eth0 (internet) and eth1 (local network). Shorewall is the high-level firewall configuration tool for iptables. I have a domain registered with DynDNS so that I can find my firewall out on the internet using a fully qualified name. On the internal network there are a couple of Debian and Windows machines, a networked printer and a Linksys WAP11. The WAP is used for visiting laptops and dishes out IPs as needed. Everything else has a static IP.

All I want to do is to get name resolution to be reliable. I have appropriate /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf files. I think I have most of the configuration options right. What I am seeing is the following:

  • A laptop that connects over the WAP11 often has broken name resolution for a (random?) period of time. No names (local or remote) get resolved. Sometimes remote name resolution starts working on its own - after a time. Even more bizzarely, sometimes only one of the machines - a Debian PC - seem to get local name resolution - a Windows box, a printer, the WAP and the (Debian) firewall itself don't. Very confusing!??
  • Rebooting the firewall machine often seems to fix the name resolution problems on the internet - but the local name resolution still misbehaves (majority of names cannot be resolved),

Basically, I don't know how to properly set all the options in dnsmasq.conf... I can post it if anyone would like to try and help me! =)

VIA's EPIA mini-ITX range of PC boards work great with Debian Sarge, and I am starting to use them to build capable firewalls and other useful systems. A real benefit of these boards are the fanless versions (totally silent) and the low power consumption. My current firewall system consumes around 1.3 A at 12 V DC - that is less than 16 W.

I started experimenting with a VIA EPIA ME6000 with Gentoo - what a hassle. I never got the board to work right; the compiling from source took forever on the 600 MHz VIA processor and it would fail repeatedly with incomprehensible errors nine times out of ten. In the end I gave up. At this point I had never heard of Debian, but I gave it a try with the latest 2.6 kernel. It worked straight away, and I was on the road to building useful systems!

My first firewall was built around Debian Sarge on a VIA PD6000. Shorewall (from the testing branch) implemented the rules. dnsmasq handled the DNS and DHCP requirements of the local network. The biggest mistake I made was installing a full-on Gnome desktop, which made it awkward to run the system headless (no keyboard or monitor - see a related post on this site) due to X complaining. This means I will rework it without a graphical desktop... and also I will have to learn to configure everything without GUIs. =)
