As mentioned in my previous weblog I decided to install shorewall on $server.

I configured my interface file for one interface only since I disabled one of the nic's in this box.
The rules file was setup specially to distinguish between services which are allowed from LAN and these which are allowed from internet as well.
It's quite nice and you can easily setup things like this with shorewall. I like it!

./sabin -s

Since we allways read about keeping a server with mostly minimal services running when it comes to security, I was wondering how secure my server is. This is my setup:

________

|internet|

________

|

Linksys WRT54G (router, firewall)

|

Netgear 8 port Switch

|

$debian sarge box and other clients

I run different services like ssh, http(s), samba, GNUMP3d, mysql, exim4, courier and hopefully cups as printserver soon in case I get this HP psc 1215 working.

I do redirect some ports only like: 22, 80, 143 to my server and the rest of named services are only from my lan available.
How secure am I with such a setup even if I have plenty services running?

Was just wondering...

./sabin -s

After trying to make my HP psc 1215 USB printer work on my sarge box, I found a post in a forum about a known bug in CUPS.

After building the drivers for this printer, I was able to add it using CUPS interface, though I couldn't print anything! In case my article gets accepted by the admin, you'll be able to read a closer description of my problem in the main page.

Is it a bug or just my me?

greets!

I downloaded a kubuntu iso on a box located in florida even if I'm in .at ;) just imagine! but this was the only way to get it since I have a traffic limit here on my adsl connection. The admin of $box will burn it onto a cd and send it to austria. I'm looking forward to get it and give it a try.
Like I mentioned I decided on kubuntu, because I'm not a real gnome fan. ./sabin -s
