Is it ever too late to learn?

I sometimes feel learning to be a server adminstrator is sometimes quite intimidating. What do you think should be the most important first-steps you should take in learning how to be a server adminstrator, especially as a newbie looking to improve their skillset.

scripting. but really, there are thousands of websites that cover this subject. so maybe you should learn to stfw.

No, don't start with scripting. Learn how things work first and then script them.
Also, yes, there are thousands of websites that cover this subject. This is one of them and it lacks a beginner's guide. So maybe the previous commenter should learn to say [something useful | nothing] instead of just 'stfw n00b lol' which helps no one and makes you look like an Anonymous jerk.
