I've just tried Beryl v. 0.1.9999.1~0beryl1 and I have to say it is nothing short of amazing. Blows compiz 0.2.2 from Debian official repo (and probably Vista, too ) out of the water. 'Emerald Theme Manager' rocks.

Maybe 'Beryl Settings Manager' is a bit disorganized as of yet. IMHO it still suffers from some serious usability problems, but the sheer amount of options it offers is impressive for a 6-month old project.

Take a look at a review and a short tutorial:

They have debs for Etch:
deb etch main
deb-src etch main

Specs: Debian testing AMD64,
tajwan:/home/leszek# uname -a
Linux #1 Fri Dec 29 00:50:05 CST 2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux
tajwan:/home/leszek# glxinfo | grep renderer
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 7100 GS/PCI/SSE2
tajwan:/home/leszek# glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"
OpenGL version string: 2.1.0 NVIDIA 97.46

been using beryl on debian and ubuntu for a while now, most of the effects i disable as the delay with the pretty effects slow me down, but the eye candy is a nice addition :)
