Debian Administration website design contest!

Posted by Steve on Tue 4 Dec 2007 at 22:08

The current look of this site hasn't changed much for the past two years, apart from a few additional CSS rules being used by default in article texts. Whilst the content here is hopefully of sufficient quality to allow the current design to be tolerated I'm sure we can do better.

I've been resisting the temptation to redesign the current pages for the past couple of months, because I'm just not sure I could do much better than the current site - Most of the other designs I've used have been taken verbatim from the Open Source Web Designs Site..

So I've decided to see what the readers can do to help, and would like to see designs from people with better skills than myself.

Now on to the fun part. In order to qualify you should submit a complete CSS & HTML files, not merely an image, of at least two pages:

The Front page

The front page is the part that should contain summaries of the articles. Currently it contains the most recent weblog entries, and some other information too.

An Article Page

The article page, such as this one, shows the article the user is reading and some side-links. Please ensure you have at least a couple of comments to make the thing look as realistic as possible!

If you wish to get extra credit feel free to restyle the planet site.

I have only one request:

  • We should use the Debian red, if not strongly, then at least a little.

Logos may be replaced, updated, or redrawn as you see fit. Similarly fonts and sizes are up for redesign. If you don't like three-column designs then feel free to implement something else

Fine Print:

  • If we use your design we'll link to you in the Site Credits.
  • Our decision is final.
  • Submissions will be accepted either as a zipfile attachment sent by email to the webmaster, or as a comment to a live HTTP site upon this article.
  • The deadline for submissions will be December 25th 2007.
  • Anybody wanting to donate gifts/prizes for this, or future, "competitions", feel free to get in touch.

Simple is beautiful!

The only problem I have with this Design is an Opera Issue, no matter if on linux or win.
For e.g. http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/563
in the middle of the article the Code starts turning green, including the side Login form. So its almost not readable. No idea why, didnt debug it, guess its a css issue, happend on an other article before. (If demand I will post an screenshot)

cheers!

it's a bug in the markup:
<h4>Build PKI</h4>
<pre class="terminal">
<span class="prompt">$</span> <span class="input">. /etc/pki/vars<span>
[more of the same]

</pre>

<p>(put this password somewhere safe - you'll need it for future keys)</span>

I think the site is currently well-designed and not in need of much change.

The one thing that I would fix is that you have quite a few "hidden" links, i.e. text that is a link but is neither underlined nor blue; for example the titles in the "recent weblogs" section on the left. If I see something interesting there my immediate reaction is to click on the blue underlined username, which is not the right thing to do.

I think this is going into the wrong direction. I can understand that it would be nice to see a fresh new design on this site. I just wanted to say, probably like endecotp, that this design doesn't bother me at all. But for sure it could be more modern!

Who ever who would put effort into making a new stylesheet can be sure to be appreciated by the community here and its defenatly worth to discuss it.

So all you web gurus out there, show us your magic!

Please don't change anything!

I love this site because of the content and its simple style.

It's OK and that's enough. There is no need to change anything.

This design was updated quite a while ago and I have tried to get down to do some changes but haven't had enough time. I did quite some work on blog posts but couldn't finish it. Maybe I should try again during the coming holidays and see if we can improve this and remove some stuff to make it look less confusing.

Please reopen the contest. The debian project is great but the website does not reflect that at all.
