This website is migrating to a new host.

This website is migrating to a new host over the next day or two, during that time there may be issues with availability and reliability.

I will endeavor to make sure that downtime is minimal, and that no comments/new users, or other database content is lost.

When the migration is complete there will be an update, until then things are probably still in limbo.

This website, and several others, is hosted by Bytemark Hosting [referral free link] a company I've been using for a couple of years. They give dicounts to Debian Developers, and also support the Debian project through donations for new-signups.

During the migration (from an UML instance to a Dedicated host) your patience is appreciated.

So I presume that this move will be accompanied by an IP change? Then your priority should be to reduce the TTL for the DNS entry. Give it a few minutes. It has to be done a day before the move (especially if your default TTL is 24 hours).

Otherwise, it should be relatively simple. Copy data over to new server, test website by editing your /etc/hosts file to override the DNS lookup, change DNS when it's time.

Good tips. Whilst I run DNS for several domains, for this one I'm still using the registrars servers - so I don't have that level of control.

(Since I'm mentioning names, I register my domains via easily. They allow decent control of forwarding mail and web addresses as well as very simple DNS control).

Are you staying with Bytemark?

Yes, moving from an UML instance to a dedicated host.

That *is* interesting -- I'd like to hear how you liked the UML hosting, and why you are moving ?

The UML hosting rocked. It gives you full root control of the remote machine, and was cheap, reliable, stable and useful.

The reason I moved was mostly because of increasing traffic, and partly space demands.

I had an article here linked to by osnews.com, and a few other sites. The site didn't cope well, although that was partly my fault for being relatively unfamiliar with tweaking apache2 for performance.

As for bytemark the company, they've been great. Very helpful, supportive and good at handling the few support requests I've made.

The reason I didn't go with a dedicated host initially was because I was saving money. At the time that decision made sense. Now I'm running this site, and it deserved a better host than the one I had.

I think paying to upgrade the UML instance with more memory and more disk space would have gained a similar speedup - but only for a while.

Going up a few jumps will prove better value and avoid issues at intense moments.

im guessing the move went well :) btw you were linked on /. and as far as i know the server stayed up, the UML must be pretty good if it survived a slashdotting.

The slashdot link was a good test - the server held up well then, but with osnews, lxr, and a couple of other places all at the same time things were less good.

That's partly because I'd switched to Apache2 and not spent so long setting it up to scale so well. Hopefully that's not a problem I'll have again!

I can also vouch for Bytemark! :)
I found them through this site and have had a UML account for about 4 months now with no problems and great support.

btw, thanks for providing a great Debian resource Steve :)
