Weblog entry #34 for dkg

Can you mirror-read?

A high school student i work with is trying to gather data on the prevalence of mirror-reading (the ability to easily read text that is reversed left-to-right).

He's posted a simple webapp to gather data points for his experiment. It should take only a couple of minutes to try it out and give him some data. If he gets enough data to write something up, i'll try to encourage him to publish his results as well.

Weird.. apparently I can mirror read.. I actually typed the mirror text faster than I typed the normal text.

I had no idea...

Does his application actually save partial results from the mirror version, or does it only count people who type the whole thing? I typed about 3/4 of the mirror version.

As a student in the class, i can tell you that it only submits it if you finish the entire thing.

As another student in the class, I know that it's *supposed* to submit whatever was typed - whether you finished in time or not.

I also typed nearly all of it, but missed two words. Still I found it rather easy to actually figure out what it means. Very nice link!

I'd like to help, but the server's timing out for me at the moment. Will try again soon.

Someone might want to point out the consequences of copyright infringement to him.

Thanks for the suggestion. But do you really think that
  • two chunks of < 1 paragraph each,
  • for a non-profit/scholastic purpose
  • which does not detract from (or compete with) the original work
falls outside the bounds of fair use?

I agree that there are other problems with his choice of text, btw, but i'm not sure that copyright infringement is relevant here. Of course, being sued by a big publishing house would really suck, even if you win in the end :/
