Weblog entry #2 for daemon
Since we're talking about work, it seems that Google are also on the hunt for sys-admins and tech engineers. What caught me out about the whole deal so far, is that I was contacted directly, out of the blue, which came as a bit of a surprise.
I'm not sure how my name managed to crop up in their list of contacts, but I guess, they are Google after all, if anyone's going to find something in a search of the web, they're as likely as anyone...
Either way, I'm very flattered, and very interested too. Especially if it'll get me comfortably back to the UK (international relocation costs a bomb, so it's always better if someone else picks up the tab ;-)
Cheers,:wq

I think there is a form letter that is used in a lot of cases. I know I've had the exact same mail from two recruiters relating to Google.
I'd be interested if they had an Edinburgh office, but not otherwise!

My initial reaction was pretty sceptical, but it was more than just a form letter. I've no doubt that there's a basic template involved, but several of the details were definitely targeted at me personally, which made me wonder.
And I understand what you mean about Edinburgh -- if it was a choice of Mountain View, or Sydney, I wouldn't even be entertaining the idea. But London is just 30 miles away from "$HOME", and alot closer than where I am currently (6000+ miles from home).
I very nearly just junked the message as spam, becuase it had a very spammy looking subject. Not quite sure what made me second guess and open the message, but there you go, it's odd how these things happen.

I went through 4 rounds of phone interviews, but ultimately the jobs were not where I currently live and I wasn't prepared to hop through their hoops like a performing poodle.
As Steve said, if they opened an office on my doorstop I'd be prepared to jump through hoops...
Perhaps we could make a T-Shirt for being Googled for?

Also, I think their Norwegian office is quite far away from where I live..
